Photo by Muddy Defender. This is a nifty picture. Great balance between the ambient light and the lights. It’s definitely getting dark out, but the sky is still a nice light gray. The lights do a great job of making the jeep pop and creating some contrast between it and…

Photo by PrecisionPurple. Since it is still really hot around Jersey, I decided to look through some winter photos on Flickr. This one stuck out. I like the way the tree in the foreground kind of frames the picture. Nice composition. You can really see where the light falls off…

Photo by Micah Camara. Very cool picture. The quick shutter speed freezes the water in place. It’s nifty how the water splays out into a near perfect circle, too. Looks like a nice beach to hang out on, too. Nicer than the Jersey shore…

Changing the aperture setting on your camera has a . But it also effects your image in another way. The aperture setting creates what’s called depth of field. When you take a picture, you focus on a specific point. This would typically be your subject; let’s say a person. As…

Your digital camera’s aperture setting is one of the three main settings that determines whether your image is well-exposed or not. Inside your camera is a digital sensor that captures light. The sensor is covered by a pair of doors (the shutter, read more ), which open and shut to…

One of the three main settings you can adjust on your digital camera is the shutter speed.  Altering this setting will have a direct effect on an image’s exposure – how bright or dark the color is. So how does the shutter speed effect an image’s exposure? Letting Light In…

About Digital Photography How To

Digital Photography How To is intended to be a guide to people learning how to use their digital SLR cameras. Three years ago, I had never picked up a camera; now, I produce a yearbook every year and I moonlight as a professional photographer.

I write this website to share what I've learned in that time. The topics will range from truly beginners topics, to tutorials for post processing, to resources for yearbook and graphic design, to thoughts on transitioning from a hobbyist to a professional. Keep up to date by subscribing to the RSS feed.
